That Perfect Tan

The other day I was reading about beauty trends in Asia: putting it in a nutshell the article said that many women in Asia are craving for white skin. The whiter the better, even if it’s ruining their skin over the years of if some of the ingredients are, well, dubious. Especially fancy: cream that makes brown nipples pink.
Strangely enough, many women in the Western world are looking for the opposite: tanned skin for that ‘healthy’ look, also with tan lines for showing that they can afford a week-long vacation. (Source: DDF) Continue reading

Tomorrow's Elite

The other worrying trend deals with so-called ‘microaggressions’. This worth-reading article describes a campus world where students are developing an extra-thin skin, making them demand a safe environment completely free from any disturbances. And the hurdles are low: even the slightest hint of discrimination, even if it barely sounds like one, becomes a risk for the alleged offender. Quotes like “America is a land of opportunity” or “Where were you born” become sharp weapons of discrimination and racism this way.
This is not only an American development: trigger warnings, even applied to classic literature, are not uncommon at universites in other countries, too. The defenders of the weak ones are greatly overstating their case, for their rigorous zero tolerance policy supports pathological thinking and an inability to handle alternate or opposing opinions. This is not far away from thought crime, and a smelly breeze of stalinism is blowing over from the campuses of colleges and universities. Watch out, this will be tomorrow’s elite.

That Keyword

Considering the question how to make a site more popular, we are talking about finding the right keyword. Or keywords: if somebody is looking for, say, “sex”, hits this into his keyboard when searching the web, it would be cool to be on the first page of the search engine result list. If not among the first links on that page. Or even be the first links for a search for sex! That would be great, but the keyword ‘sex’ is probably a word too big for you at the moment. Too many sites are touting for this word. ‘Porn’ is another one. Like almost every other word you know around ‘sex’. So what can you do? Get a better keyword, of course. But how? Continue reading

Hyped and Hacked

Reviewing these reports telling me how many requests that tried to hack my humble little server, I can’t but note how many of them were coming from countries struggling with their constitution, with democracy itself. It’s fascinating to see their struggles coming to my webserver. Why, you ask: here’s why. In order to hype their stars / politicians / system they’re looking for platforms they can put their bullshit on. Hacking a server for doing this type of propaganda work is easy and almost cost-free: so they’re scanning the web for wordpress websites and voilà, the next one is Mental Sinema. But not today, folks (knocking on wood), not today. So sorry for not hyping your beloved dictator / terror organization / whatever. Continue reading
